Putting on Scales
The practice of weighing convicts comes from the belief that the followers or apprentices of Satan would be lighter than their physical appearance suggested. These scales were called "putting on scales". They were common throughout Europe especially in Belgiuna and the Netherlands. The procedure was carried out in stages. the accused was striped and searched for any extra weight they may have tied or hidden on their body. They were then weighed against an amount judged to be appropraite for their size and shape. If the accused was found to be too light, torturing would commence until they confessed to their crimes. If the person weighed the correct amount they were cleared and allowed to walk free.

As you can tell there was huge room for abuse of this system and anyone could easily be found guilty and subject ot touture. Occasionally the accused was weighed against a Bible. This usually allowed the accused the walk free as it is difficult to find a person lighter than a Bible.
