Day 17

On the way to Mt Cook, in Waitaki District.

Aoraki Mt Cook Alpine Lodge
I did not book this hotel as it is already fully book, Luckily Stray guarantee first night accomodation. They have a special package includes 1 night stay + Wifi + Dinner (55nzd).

Aoraki Mt Cook Alpine Lodge
Our driver told us he will bring us there and give us 3hrs to walk back, if we missed the bus and just need to walk 20-25mins back. AND in the end google say it takes 1hr to walk back :(
Even the signboard indicate to reach Hooker Lake is 1h35mins, to and fro is impossible to make it at 3hr. In the end I took 3h30mins and missed the bus. My friend rush like hell and only managed to catch the bus.

I climbed up halfway and nearly dont know how to get down hahaa

When getting nearer to the lake, it is getting colder and more snow....

This is quite scary, about 15-20mins to the Lake, the road is entirely covered by ice.
Very slippery, should have not try to go over.
When returned, nearly slipped and fall a couple of times.
Ok, finally arrived the lake and this is it.
This is absolutely beautiful scene, suddenly a flash of yellow just above me, it last about 10mins.
Finally reach the entrance and I knew I missed the bus, can see the hotel from far but google say 55-65mins.
Tried walking back, after about 15mins (6.45pm), the sky dark very fast and no lamp post along the road. It was pretty dangerous as most car drove very fast and may not able to see a pedestrian walking along the road side. Tried hitchhike a couple of times and managed to get one after 5th attempts, a family from Harbin dropped me to the hotel.

When reached hotel and talked to the others, most of them cannot ride on the bus and all of them hitchhike back.
This is highly recommend from our driver, say best beef in NZ. And again I was conned.
300g grilled sirloin. Overcooked and taste like frozen beef unfortunately.
